Heatwave Recap: Our Most Common AC Maintenance In Portsmouth Call-Outs
The June heatwave didn’t ease in gently. One week it was a normal Portsmouth summer, the next it was the kind of heat that makes you question every life decision you’ve ever made, including whether you ever booked that AC Maintenance in Portsmouth you’d been putting off.
Our phones didn’t stop. Across Portsmouth, Hampshire, Gosport, Fareham, and Waterlooville, we were out every day dealing with systems that simply weren’t ready for the heat. And the same five problems kept coming up, again and again.
Here’s what we saw most and what you can do about it.
1. 🌡️ Outdoor Units Overheating and Shutting Down
This was the big one. When temperatures spike, the outdoor unit has to work significantly harder to dump heat from inside your building. If it’s already running warm, poorly ventilated, or covered in a year’s worth of dust and debris, it’ll hit its thermal limit and shut itself off as a safety measure.
We were called out to properties across Portsmouth where the unit had simply gone into protection mode. The system wasn’t broken. It was exhausted.
The fix:
Make sure your outdoor unit has clear space around it, isn’t sat in direct sun with no airflow, and has been cleaned as part of a proper AC Maintenance service before the hot weather arrives. A unit that’s been serviced handles heat stress far better than one that hasn’t been touched in two years.

2. ⚡ Unserviced Systems That Were Hanging On by a Thread
You know the ones. The system that’s been making a slightly odd noise for six months. The one that takes a bit longer to cool down than it used to. The one that “seems fine, mostly.”
The June heat was the final straw for a lot of these across Portsmouth and the wider Hampshire area. Dirty filters restricting airflow, coils caked in dust, refrigerant running low. Any one of those issues on its own slows a system down. Stack them together and add 30-degree heat, and you’ve got a breakdown on your hands.
The fix:
Annual AC Maintenance in Portsmouth exists precisely to catch these things before they become failures. A service engineer will clean the filters, check refrigerant levels, inspect the coils, and tell you honestly if something needs attention. It’s far cheaper than an emergency call-out in a heatwave.

3. 💧 Blocked Drain Lines Causing Water Damage
Air conditioning systems remove humidity from the air as they cool, and that moisture has to go somewhere, usually through a condensate drain line. In normal conditions, this trickles away without issue. During a heatwave, the system is pulling out far more moisture than usual, and if that drain line is partially blocked or hasn’t been cleared in a while, the water backs up quickly. The result is dripping from the indoor unit onto floors, furniture, or whatever happens to be underneath it.
This caught out a number of Portsmouth and Hampshire properties during the June heat, and it’s one of the more avoidable problems on this list.
The fix:
Drain lines should be checked and cleared as part of routine air conditioning maintenance. If your indoor unit starts dripping during hot weather, turn the system off and call us. Don’t leave it running as the backup can cause water damage to the unit itself.
Contact our call-out team if you spot any water pooling around your indoor unit.
4. 🌬️ Systems Blowing Warm Air (Low Refrigerant)
Refrigerant doesn’t get used up in normal operation, but it can leak. A slow refrigerant leak might go unnoticed for months because the system still runs, just less and less effectively. Then the heatwave arrives, the system is under full load for the first time in months, and suddenly it’s blowing air that feels warm rather than cool.
This was one of the most common complaints we heard across Portsmouth and Havant during June. Portsmouth homeowners and business owners assuming their system had broken, when in reality it just needed a refrigerant top-up and the source of the leak identified and repaired.

The fix:
Refrigerant checks are part of a proper AC servicing visit. If your system is cooling less effectively than it used to, or cycling on and off more frequently, low refrigerant is a likely cause. Our engineers are Refcom certified and can diagnose and recharge your system safely.

5. 🏠 Portable Coolers Running 24/7 and Burning Out
Not every call-out involved a wall-mounted system. We also had a number of enquiries from people, particularly businesses across Hampshire, who’d been relying on portable cooler units through the heatwave, running them around the clock without a break.
Portable coolers aren’t designed for sustained heavy use in extreme heat. They overheat, the compressors fail, and once they’re gone, you’re left with nothing while temperatures are still climbing. Several Portsmouth businesses found this out the hard way during June.
The fix:
Portable units are a short-term measure, not a long-term solution. If you’re regularly reaching for a portable cooler every summer, it’s worth having a proper air conditioning installation assessed. A wall-mounted split system from a manufacturer like Mitsubishi, Daikin, or Samsung will handle sustained summer heat comfortably and will cost less to run than a portable unit working overtime.

From Aaron at ARH
Honestly, the June heatwave was one of our busiest stretches since we started. Every single day we were out across Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Waterlooville, dealing with systems that would have been absolutely fine if they’d had a service in the spring.
That’s not me trying to sell you something. That’s just what we saw, job after job.
The systems that had been serviced? They handled the heat. The ones that hadn’t? They didn’t.
If your AC scraped through June and you’re thinking “I’ll sort it before next summer,” please do. We’d much rather see you on a planned maintenance visit than on an emergency call-out in the middle of a heatwave.
